The Tale of Casa Bella: A Culinary Time Capsule
I recently stumbled upon a restaurant that left me with a peculiar sense of nostalgia and a pressing concern for its future. Casa Bella, nestled on Karangahape Road in Auckland, is a culinary time capsule, serving Italian cuisine from a bygone era.
The restaurant is the brainchild of Aman and Nikolas, former colleagues at Portofino Mission Bay. Their menu, however, is a bit too reminiscent of their previous venture, catering to a crowd that prefers a generic version of Italian food. Think pineapple on pizza and a heavy reliance on 'Napoli sauce', which, in my opinion, is a nostalgic nod to the ketchup-style sauces of 1980s New Zealand.
What makes this place intriguing is the dichotomy between the food's taste and its presentation. The dishes, like chicken livers in marsala sauce, are surprisingly tasty, but the execution is often off. For instance, the bruschetta, which was more like a baked pizza dough creation, lacked the promised basil and parsley. It's as if the restaurant is stuck in a time warp, unable to adapt to modern culinary expectations.
The service, however, is a highlight. The waitress was a delightful intermediary between the kitchen and me, adding a touch of charm to the experience. But the overall atmosphere is a bit underwhelming, with a half-empty dining room that feels like a missed opportunity in such a prime location.
My pasta, predictably, was overcooked, a common theme in restaurants that haven't kept pace with the evolution of New Zealand cuisine. The wine list, though affordable, lacks the sophistication one might expect from a central Auckland establishment. The rare eye fillet, while expertly cooked, came with a 'mustard pepper' sauce and steamed vegetables, a combination that feels more at home in a retirement village than a bustling city center.
The restaurant's approach seems to be stuck in a different era, reminiscent of the dining options in Muldoon-era Hamilton. It's a style that might appeal to a certain demographic, but it's not in sync with the culinary preferences of today's Auckland diners. This is where the concern for its longevity arises.
In my view, Casa Bella is a restaurant that needs to decide whether to embrace the past or adapt to the present. It's a delicate balance, as nostalgia can be a powerful draw, but it's not enough to sustain a restaurant in a competitive market. Personally, I'd recommend a visit for those seeking a trip down memory lane, but for the owners, a strategic evolution might be the key to survival.
