Melbourne is reeling from a shocking act of vandalism that has targeted its historical heart, leaving a trail of destruction on monuments that have stood for over a century.
In the days leading up to January 26th, a significant act of destruction occurred, despite measures put in place to safeguard these historical markers from potential attacks. Two cherished monuments in Melbourne have been defaced, sparking outrage and concern.
The Pioneer monument, a fixture in Melbourne's oldest park, Flagstaff Gardens, was violently torn down overnight. Police suspect that heavy machinery was employed in this act, and the severely damaged remains were subsequently vandalized. The plinth of this monument, which was erected in 1871, was spray-painted with the defiant message, "Death to 'Australia'". This obelisk, standing at a height of five meters and constructed from sandstone, holds a profound historical significance as it marks the city's very first burial site.
Nearby, the Separation memorial, established in 1950 to commemorate the founding of the Victorian colony a century prior, suffered a similar fate, also being defaced.
Melbourne's lord mayor, Nicholas Reece, expressed his dismay, labeling the incident "despicable" during a press conference. He characterized the perpetrators as "idiots" who, in his view, failed to grasp the deep historical importance of the structures they targeted. Mayor Reece stated, "We are up for a debate about the future of statues and memorials in Melbourne ... but tearing them down, acts of vandalism, that will not be accepted."
This act of vandalism took place even with the implementation of cameras and fencing designed to protect statues and monuments in anticipation of Australia Day, January 26th. But here's where it gets controversial: This isn't an isolated incident. Similar acts of vandalism have occurred in the lead-up to Australia Day in recent years, frequently targeting sites that represent the city's colonial past. For instance, in 2025, vandals toppled a statue of Captain Cook at the entrance of Edinburgh Gardens in Fitzroy North during the January long weekend. In a separate event in January 2024, council workers were seen removing the remnants of a Captain Cook statue in St Kilda, Melbourne. The City of Yarra even voted to remove the Captain Cook statue in May 2025, citing the substantial cost of its upkeep due to repeated vandalism.
Mayor Reece confirmed that the exact cost of repairing the Flagstaff Gardens monuments is still being assessed, but he assured the public that they would be reinstated. He emphasized, "We cannot allow it to be the case that when statutes [and] memorials are destroyed ... that is rewarded by allowing it to continue."
Mayor Reece also noted that some of the spray-painted messages and symbols could potentially be classified as a hate crime under Victoria's anti-vilification laws. He pointed out the timing of the incident, which coincided with a national day of mourning for the victims of the Bondi Beach terror attack.
Premier Jacinta Allan echoed these sentiments, calling the incident a "disgrace." She remarked, "Even on a day about love and unity, these people can't help but introduce hate and destruction." The Premier added, "The groups who continue to commit these crimes must face the full force of the law."
A crime scene has been established at the location, and police are actively investigating the matter.
