Major shake-ups are happening in Ann Arbor! The Michigan Wolverines are heading into their Citrus Bowl game against Texas with some significant absences. It's a tough blow for the team, but let's break down what's happening.
Three key starters – defensive end Derrick Moore, linebacker Jaishawn Barham, and offensive lineman Giovanni El-Hadi – have made the decision to sit out the December 31st game in Orlando. Interim coach Biff Poggi confirmed this news, adding that all three players are now eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft.
Derrick Moore, who led Michigan in sacks, made his intentions official with a heartfelt message on social media. Barham, who moved to the edge position this year, contributed with four sacks, aiming to be a disruptive force on the defense. El-Hadi, a veteran presence, has played in 51 games over five seasons for the Wolverines, starting in 24 of them.
Poggi emphasized the impact of these players, stating, “All three of those guys are high-rep guys. They played a lot of football.” When asked if any other players might opt out, Poggi expressed his belief that there wouldn't be any more.
But here's where it gets controversial... The team is still dealing with the fallout from the abrupt firing of former head coach Sherrone Moore on December 10th. Moore was let go due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. He was later arrested and charged with serious offenses following an incident at the staffer’s residence.
Since then, Poggi has been focused on rebuilding relationships with the players, their families, and incoming recruits. He has been actively listening and taking responsibility for the program's recent issues. An independent law firm is currently investigating the football program, the handling of the Moore situation, and the overall athletic department culture.
Despite the turmoil, the Wolverines, with a 9-3 record, are preparing for the bowl game. Tight end Marlin Klein, cornerback Zeke Berry, and linebacker Jimmy Rolder have all indicated they plan to play on December 31st.
Poggi expressed his pride in the players and coaches who are sticking with the team.
