A terrifying road rage incident unfolded on Christmas Day, leaving a Bay of Plenty family shaken and their vehicle severely damaged.
Rachel, a concerned mother, shared her harrowing experience with 1News, detailing a five-kilometer pursuit and repeated ramming by an aggressive driver. The incident began at a roundabout in Te Puke, where a silver minivan driver chose an incorrect lane, nearly causing a collision with Rachel's car.
"I had to swerve to avoid a hit, and I tooted my horn gently," Rachel explained. "What happened next was unexpected and escalated quickly."
As Rachel turned onto a side street, the driver allegedly waited at an intersection and then pursued her car aggressively.
"He was right up behind me, so close I could only see his windscreen. Then, he started nudging my car from behind, just like in the movies."
Rachel's older son tried to document the incident with photos, while her youngest called for help. The pursuit continued through Waitangi and onto an open road, with the driver following extremely closely and ramming Rachel's car repeatedly.
"I was scared he would force us off the road and we'd roll. It was a terrifying experience, especially with my children in the car."
The attack intensified as Rachel slowed to turn into her destination. The driver aimed directly at her door, hitting the back corner of the car where her son was sitting. Both boys witnessed the driver's wheels lift off the ground as he ricocheted off their car, before speeding away.
The car sustained significant rear damage, including a smashed tail light, a ripped bumper, and a tire torn off its rim. Thankfully, Rachel and her children were only mildly physically hurt, but the emotional impact was profound.
"He saw my children in the backseat, yet he still chose to attack us. It's a miracle we're all okay."
Police confirmed they were called to the scene and are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
"This incident highlights the importance of staying calm and aware on the roads, especially during the holiday season. It's a reminder that road rage can escalate quickly and have devastating consequences."
